I have seen these little guys all over Pinterest and Tumblr recently. They are Himilayan Salt lamps, although from a rather embarrassing experience I can tell you they do not taste like salt :)
I have heard of a variety of healing properties of salt lamps, from increasing Melatonin production, ionizing rooms, and cleansing your house of negative vibes. Personally I think they just look really awesome and give off a nice candle like light. Plus if you get a neutral tone one, not an orange, you can change the color light they give off with different colour light bulbs..

Hummm I am unsure. I think this thing is definitely between cool and a fad that will look silly a few years from now.

I've had a salt candle holder for about 10 years, so not a fad in our house. Funny enough, I was just looking at a lovely electric version in town yesterday.
Oh I was under the impression they were all electric. Now that I'm picturing a candle inside I like it 100x more.
I have several of these in electric form from 15 years ago, and I bought 13 candle holder tea light ones in various shapes and sizes...they are beautiful! They can be found in Home Goods and Marshalls etc. I would not be without them.
I've been thinking about these salt lamps too. Looking at a place by my plants where I could put one right now...thanks for the inspiration!
My sister gave me a salt lamp (electric) and it does taste like salt. Yup, I did lick it. :)
I had one ... it leaked.
Seriously, it would leave a puddle wherever I placed it.
My husband got rid of it.
:-/
the salt lamps sure look pretty! i agree that the light they give off looks lovely, I had no idea that they had any healing properties though! I think surrounding your self with things from the natural world is always healing, like green plants, or the sound of trickling water!

These are my favorite! I've always wanted one.

They should taste like salt if they're real! It is just a big hunk of salt :) I cook with pink himalayan salt too. I think they're beautiful.
Honestly, I´m biting my bump right now, but I threw them all away like ten years ago or so, because, well, they were so...90s.... But everything keeps coming back, and if the Grunge is back anyways, I can buy some salt lamps along with doc martens and a flowery dress, right?

Hmmm, hard to tell if it is really cleansing, but they do give out a beautiful light!
They are not a fad over here! I love mine and give them away as gifts to fellow appreciators. The soft melon glow could never grow old in this house. If your lamp is real is should taste like salt. Every one I have ever had has been made from a large (or not so large) hunk of salt.
Careful, lovely they are but put a plate underneath it. I had one on a piano that sits unused, must have been leaking for ages. I think it attracts moisture in the air I really should google it because it the piano wood and wire is unrepairable. Just a warning!
Nuh-uh, they totally do taste salty! You can actually buy ground up himalyan salt for food that is exactly this. Though you may have licked (I assume) one that had some sort of glaze coating on it, I suppose (mine don't... and parts of one of them have sort of melted off when I left them too near the heat. Oops.)
I didn't know what a Salt lamp is. I have seen them before but I haven't had any idea. Now I have :) thanks for nice pictures.
they leak in the humidity when they are not on, or rather sweat..just keep it on 24/7 and it won't drip. also it releases negative ions into the air so to be affectively cleansing should be left on all the time anyway!
The first time I saw a salt lamp was in Ibiza when a child (late 70's) and they can be found all around the world. I wouldn't say are a fad or especially on trend, I grew up with them in my parent's home and have since been gifted several. They are lovely to use in healing and energy circles, too. Lovely post, and what a magical blog and space. Thank you.
So they are real? A friend told me they are fake
