Earth Tone Ceramic

I have been saving pictures for this post for a long time.... maybe 2 years +, and I have finally got to a point where I have collected enough beautiful earth tone ceramic collections to make it a post.... woo hoo!!

So here it is..... what a bunch of beauties

I just wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to you guys. I put my email address at the top of this page a couple of weeks ago and since, I have had about 7 or 8 really kind emails that have all been so motivating. Ranging from dropping me a line to say they like Moon to Moon, asking where they can get certain items or just wanting to subscribe (I haven't a clue how to set up that option). It really has made my day each time I have received one, and if I can I am happy to help (although it may take me a while to answer....sorry)

The Perfect Mug: Hand To Earth Ceramics

Down To Earth Ceramics

A little while ago I asked my Instagram followers for some help in finding the perfect mug! I got so many wonderful suggestions that I thought I would share them here with you guys. There are some seriously wonderfully talented potters out there, and being a keen (but not very good) potter myself love to look for some inspiration

Down To Earth Ceramic's was one of the first studios that caught my eye. I love the round cauldron shaped mugs, especially the ones with Moons and Crystals on, and the glazes are really beautiful natural hues! These mugs sell like hot cakes so you need need to keep your eye on Deanna Steinborgs shop and instagram if you want to catch one....

You can see more of Deanna's beautiful work on Instagram or her Etsy Store

My name is Deanna Steinborn, and to me, ceramics represents magic, nature, art and the beauty hidden inside small, quiet moments. I had my first encounter with making ceramics in a college course in 2011, and I fell in love. I’d always loved art, but never has something captured my interest so much as playing in the mud. I am currently an artist in residence at a gallery, shop, and classroom in downtown Springfield, MO called Springfield Pottery. I genuinely believe that one could spend an entire lifetime exploring the myriad avenues this art form provides and I'm excited to continue exploring new techniques, various materials, and the endless possibilities of form.

I am currently focused on creating functional pieces, such as dinnerware, because I love that ceramics bridges the gap between art to be admired and the tactile relationship between the objects we encounter every day. I love the idea that someone wakes up every morning with his or her cup of coffee, spending their quiet moments of the day holding my mug in their hands, exploring the space where my own hands have devoted hours of love and care. These are the moments I am excited to be a part of.

For my design aesthetic, I have the most fun experimenting with all sorts of decorative techniques. Over all, I love an intricate pattern or texture. I want the eyes, hands and lips to be able to explore the surface of my forms. Most of my patterns are inspired by nature, and I love to incorporate both the symmetrical, ordered aspect of nature as well as the more free-flowing, organic qualities.

Both the process of decorating as well as forming my pieces has been a form of meditation for me, and I am so grateful to have found my niche. I fully expect for my ceramics to not only grow with me, but to help me grow as I become more connected to the earth, to other people, and to myself.

Bells and Tailsmans: Mt. Washington Pottery....

Beth Katz, Mt Washington Pottery Bellls and Talismans

Beth Katz is the creative force behind Mt. Washington Pottery, a beautiful collection of functional and decorative ceramics.

Beth makes all the work by hand and on the potter's wheel in her Los Angeles, California studio. Her work has an elegant simplicity, which marries the wabi-sabi aesthetic of traditional Japanese ceramics and the modernism of Scandinavian design. These elements are clearly visible in the fluidity of her forms and in the literal mark she leaves of her own hand: the remnant of her fingerprints at the bottom of each piece.

About Beth Katz:

I grew up in the 1970's hippie enclave of Topanga Canyon in Southern California, where I learned the art of pottery. Not realizing ceramics could be more than a hobby I continued my studies in art thinking they could lead to a career as a painter or textile designer, like many of my relatives, or I would follow in the steps of my father and become a clothing designer.

Bluebells..each bluebell is hand formed and hand carved of porcelain and glazed in subtle shades of blues and turquoise. The colors of the bells and beads varydepending on the atmosphere of the kiln and each firing is slightly different - in stock currently the blue on the right

After many years and two long careers, one as a makeup artist in the advertising world and the other as a Creative Director at a top women's magazine, I decided to go to graduate school to study Spiritual Psychology, the best decision I ever made. Studying Psychology led me to the realization that it was time to make my lifelong hobby of creating pottery my primary focus.

Talisman 156. Mt. Washington Pottery’s good luck talisman is inspired by the Indian “Nimbu Mirchi”. In the tradition of the Evil Eye Warder our talisman’s intention is to keep homes and businesses safe from all evil spirits and promote happiness and prosperity within your home and/or business.

The entire breadth of my experience continues to inspire me and influence my work each and every day. My taste and style are a reflection of the freedom of my childhood, the Southern California landscape, and the world of fashion and advertising. All the choices I have made in my life have led to this singular point in time, a time that serendipitously coincides with the resurgence of a new American Craft Movement, which I am blessed to be a part of.

Current Obsession :Heidi Anderson's Ceramic Totems

Heidi Anderson's Ceramic Totems

I came across these little Totem guys and gals by ceramic artist Heidi Anderson on The Radder's Instagram feed and just had to share. I particularly (and predicatbly) love the totems with the Moon above their heads....and they sit firmly at the top of my wish list...

" I make ceramic agateware pottery vases, planters, and sculptures that are inspired by the pottery and art of the southwest, as well as folk art of different cultures around the world. My approach is informed by my back ground in painting in the way I create designs with a method called agateware, in which different clays are combined and shaped into patterns and designs that are inlayed into the clay.
My art is informed by my appreciation of forms found in nature, geometric shapes, and the hand hewn in methods of craft. I am inspired by the many possibilities that working with clay offers and the endless ways it guides my imagination."

Heidi's Totems are available  online via The Radder.and yes, they ship Internationally, I have already checked :)

Ceramic Insence holders from IvyIvyIvy

Open palm incense holders from Brooklyn based Ceramic Artist Ivy

How unbelievably cool are these little hands from Ceramic artist IvyIvyIvy?

An open right hand has around the world been a symbol of protection and for many a symbol of friendship and peace. These beautiful hands come in either a little bowl form  or incense holder. The bowls (below) are perfect for palo santo incense and sage holders, or for your special jewelry. They would also look great grouped together on a wall. The incense holders are a slightly larger version as they have room for the falling incense.

I have one of the beautiful incense holders on delivery and cant wait to use it in my daily incense ritual. I have been looking for a special holder for ages!

Ivy also makes a range of other ceramic pieces, textiles and is a stylist. To view more from Ivy visit her webpage here

Ceramics: Spiky Planter from Kabin

Spiky Planter from Kabin

Although I know it is only November, I really want to help support smaller business's by showing off beautiful handmade items to encourage people to buy from smaller , ethical businesses this Christmas. So i have decided to create some short posts, published more regularly, featuring the beautiful items that i come across on the web.

So I am starting with this cute little Spiky planter from Kabin, a London based, one woman business run solely by Carol and ex-Vogue illustrator. This quirky little planter would look great amongst my smily face planters.

This planter is available through Carols online shop over on Not On The High Street.

Current Obsession: Martina Thornhill Ceramics

Martina Thornhill is a self taught ceramic artist based in Portland, Oregon and her beautiful work is my current obsession! Her beautiful hand built mugs are not only beautiful but actually large enough for a proper cup of tea or coffee (why do so many people make small mugs?)!

I personally am a bit obsessed with the sleepy eye pour over and the eye mug...

Martina Thornhill : Striped Mug

"I create slab built functional vessels from my home studio, using inspiration from nature, flea market treasures, primitive folk crafts, abstract art and cross country travels. Drawing on my background in fiber arts, I approach ceramics from a different perspective. Treating my clay like fabric I develop patterns, fuse seams, and use my hands to create drape and flow.

Clay bodies are chosen for the texture they bring to the piece and for their raw color contrast against glossy glaze patterns. These methods allow me to create production pieces that still maintain a sense of individuality and personality. It is important to me that each piece is unique in the way it sits on the table, or fits in the hand regardless of how many I've made. For me, my craft is about more than my methods and the objects I create. It is about curating a vision that takes into account my experiences and inspirations, and finds a connection in the homes and hearts of others. It is about slowing down and making every day objects special instead of disposable."
