A Certain Vibe: Big plants and Natural Staircases

The home of Gwen and Gawie Fagan
The home of Architect Ken Mefran

Over the years that I have been blogging my tastes have changed from cluttered and cozy to light and almost sparse. I have cleaned out a lot of my clutter (although I still have a lot hidden in the loft) and tend to make choices that incorporate natural textiles and forms.  I have a tiny little 1960's house but one thing I love about it are the huge windows throughout giving it a sense of openness.... they are also great for a house plant obsessive like myself..... the one thing I can not go minimal on.

Fernando Higueras - Rascainfierno (Hellscraper)

Fernando Higueras - Rascainfierno, Madrid, 1975-77- all images via  Fernando Higueras Foundation (click here to be directed)

Rascainfierno - "Hellscraper ", is the late Architect Fernando Higueras's Madrid residence that is entirely underground! The house was started in 1972 and would become his home and studio until his death in 2008.

Higueras graduated as an architect at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid in 1959, where he characterized his work distanciandose of rationalism and he closely followed the ideology of Frank Lloyd Wright. Thus his architecture promotes harmony between human habitat and its natural surroundings, respecting the natural environment.

"This idea saved my life thirty-odd years ago, when my friend Francisco Nieva read my tarot, saw me in three years buried underground, with a cypress above me, when for 4 times in a row the death appeared in the cards. I insisted that this did not necessarily mean that I would die. Then, it occurred to me this first hellscraper (then I projected a higher one for Ground Zero in New York), I planted a cypress, 18 meters high today, and I'm still here...alive." An Earthy Japanese Home...

I found these pictures on a Japanese Photosharing site. All the pictures are of the same room and what I love about them all as a collection is watching the room change over time.

It is such a beautiful, light and earthy room. I love the warm wooden floor boards,  massive windows and that little 'string of pearls' plant hanging from the spiral staircase. I could easily spend a lot of time just sitting in here

Thyme Herbal's 'Everyday Living Series'

I think I have featured the bottom Thyme Herbal poster before on Moon to Moon, but the collaborative work of hebalist Brittany Wood Nickerson and Illustrator Chelsea Iris Granger is just so beautiful I thought it deserved a re-share.

Although I am a nurse in a very clinical/medicine based field, I truely beleive in the power of plant based medicine and nutrition, however like many people can become lazy when cooking for myself.  These pretty posters would be perfect for the kitchen wall not only to brighten up the room but also to inspire me to cook healthy food for the family.

The Moon Calendar is also stunning and educational......About the Moon Poster the collaborative duo say...

The intention of this year’s poster is to help inspire connections with herbs associated with sleeping, dreaming, and relaxing. The moon is a nightly creature, long associated with quiet, darkness, and soft introspection. It carries a dreamy energy that helps us access the more watery, intimate places inside ourselves. Connecting with moon energy is a great way to connect with these more subtle elements of the self.

The Home of..... Artist Donjo

This beautiful hand built bohemian home is part of an Artists community in Buenos Aires

This beautiful Buenos Aires oasis is the home of Artist Donjo. The home, made from pallets and boards took him only one month to construct and is such a perfect example of what can be done with passion and a small budget. Apart form the bed and sofa which used to be his grandmothers, Donjo has also made most of the furniture..

The beautiful huge round windows mean there is plenty of natural light for house plants, and the addition of another circular window in the roof mean Donjo can lie in bed and look at the stars!

Donjo's cozy house is located in an artists community in Buenos Aires where 12 other artists have workshops and homes. I have to say this sounds like an absolute dream doesnt it?

For the love of Orchids....

To be honest I have always been a little weary of Orchids. They have always seemed so delicate and exotic, I was sure that they were the kind of plant that I would inevitably kill..... and then feel very guilty about for a while.....but it turns out I was wrong.

I have never brought myself an orchid, just admired them from a distance. However a couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Orchidsinfo.eu and asked if i would like to be sent a few orchids to take pictures of for Moon to Moon.... Well of course was my answer... the perfect chance to give Orchid mothering a go...

So I was sent a number of Orchids a couple of weeks ago and after reading about basic Orchid care online they are still alive, and with flowers!!

So here is what I have learnt....

Orchid Basics...

As far as I can see the most important step in orchid care is choosing the right Orchid for your home.

Phalenopsis
The two I have photographed above are called Phalaenopsis, often referred to as moth orchids, these are elegant orchids for indoor use. Their long sprays of colorful flowers stay fresh for months. Flowering begins in winter or early spring. This orchid generally needs less light than other types of Orchid and does well in most indoor conditions.

Watering:
  • Keep these almost dry between watering,
  • You can submerge the roots in water but don't leave them there, make sure any excess has drained before putting back in the plant pot
  • Try not to get the leaves wet , dry with a cloth if you do
Feeding
You can buy commercially made Orchid food which is what I did, I am sure there are some great non-chemical orchid foods out there but at this stage in my self-doubting orchid mama role I just did the easy thing

Maintaining the Blooms
Peak blooming time starts from late winter, primarily February and March in the northern hemisphere. Blooms normally last from four to twelve weeks.
  • When the blooms fade, cut off the spike 1/2 inch (12mm) above where it projects from the foliage.
  • Trim off any dead leaves and tissue, including old flower stems, old leaves, anything rotting, dead roots, etc.
Pruning and care
Don't prune an orchid like a shrub. If you cut part of an orchid leaf, the rest of the leaf may die, and cutting into a live pseudobulb will severely damage your orchid.

Other tips....

The ice Cube trick..... This is one I am going to try...

Apparently you can just add three ice cubes once a week and that will be enough to ensure your Orchid has enough water....

Give Away
If you live on the mainland of the UK and would like to try an Orchid then please comment below and I will choose one commenter on Friday and send them an Orchid

Also if you have any trips or tricks to share please comment below also, I wouldlove to know how you care for your orchids...

Florist: Bleuet Coquelicot in Paris

Bleuet Coquelicot: A florist in Paris Photography by Mimi Giboin for Gardenista.
I love walking into a florists and having a browse and a good sniff around although I dont always feel comfortable doing so... I saw a picture of Bleuet Coquelicot on Pinterest and tracked down the original article on Remodlista...

Bleuet Coquelicot is a florist in Paris owned by a gentleman who goes by the name of "Tom des Fleurs." Tom studied Art curation but got a job in a florist after school and now owns and runs the business himself. There are no other employees in the shop as Tom does not want to ruin the ambiance of the store.

Tom Built the shop interior himself mainly from objects he already ownded and it took two and a half months to put it all together.
