Isn't this the most beautiful idea?
It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors
share their favorite
literature and stories. In its most basic form, a
Little Free Library is a box full of books where
anyone may stop by and
pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.
Little Free Library was born in 2009 when Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it. He built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS.
Little Free Library has grown rapidly in the last 5 years and the not-for-profit organizations original goal of 2,150 libraries has been surpassed with over 15,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide in over 40 countries!!

ReplyDeleteThere a couple of whimsical book nooks in my friend's neighbourhood - in weird synchronicity, we ended up dropping off a few books just this past Saturday!
ReplyDeleteAnother friend is in the process of building a book nook for her own neighbourhood - I sent this to her for inspiration! love it!

we stayed at Westbury-sub-Mendip before Christmas and there was one in an old red phone box. I popped home, got a carrier bag full of books and swapped them all :-D
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I actually just saw one of these for the first time in Rodanthe, NC.

ReplyDeleteWow what a beautiful idea! Little free books box... :) I wish I lived somewhere it was safe to do that. It would be burned or stolen if we did it here... lol. I feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that there are places in the world where people are nice. Ahhh
