A Low impact hobbit Home in Wales

How charming is this little hobbitesque house? It was built by Simon Dale for his family for only £3000. The frame of the house is made from locally sourced Oak trimmings and the walls of the property are made from Straw bales, stone and mud which have been finished off on the interior with a lime plaster.

"The house was built with maximum regard for the environment and by reciprocation gave us a unique opportunity to live close to nature. It housed our family whilst we worked in the woodland surrounding the house doing ecological woodland management and setting up a forest garden, things that would have been impossible had we had to pay a regular rent or mortgage. The main tools used were a chainsaw, hammer and 1 inch chisel, little else really. I was not a builder or carpenter, my experience was only having had a go at one similar house 2yrs before and a bit of mucking around inbetween. This kind of building is accessible to anyone. My main relevant skills were being able bodied, having self belief and perseverance and a mate or two to give a lift now and again."

Delicious Australian Mid-Century Home

This stunning Mid-Century property is home of Doula Sunni Hart and her family and is in Eltham, Melboune. It is also probably my dream home..... all that yummy wood!! It was designed by Australian Builder and architect Alistair Knox. What I really love about this and other midcentury homes is the abundance of light coming through those huge windows.

A Dreamy Californian Home

I stumbled upon this dreamy Californian home on Instagram about a week ago and although it is a bit show home perfect in these pictures there is no denying it really is a well put together stunner!!

The home is designed by Architect Fred Blacksmith and is owned by Photographer and teacher Laura Olden who lives here in Escondido, California with her dog Novo.

There are so many beautiful photos and videos on her Instagram account Savagehouse1970 so if you like this little selection I urge you to check out the rest

Emma's Off Grid Pembrokeshire home

Emma's Pembrokeshire Hay Bale home

How glorious is this little earthen home in Wales?

Owner Emma built this beautiful little home for only £1000 using a straw bale, house manure and cob construction with a fabulous living roof which not only provides shelter but keeps the little house a hidden gem from the outside world. The house is comprised of just one room and is totally off-grid with no electricity or running water. Instead Emma collects spring water from a nearby steam and uses candle and the open fire to light her home at night. She has a compost loo and uses the stream to wash.

Emma has lived off this land for over 20 years in a series of homes that she has built, some more successful structures than others that she has built using a trial and error method. She  previously lived in a farm house on the land with her late husband and children. When the children flew the nest Emma felt comfortable to move out of the farm house and live closer to nature building herself this little home.

I really would urge you to check out the interview with Emma over at Living Big in a Tiny House where these beautiful pictures come from.

Artists Homes: King House and Studios

King house and Studio in Warrendyte was originally built as a rectangluar one room house. It was created for Artist Grahame King by Architect Robin Boyd in 1952 and after the authorities rejected the original one room dwelling later amendments were made in 1954 and 1962, adding a bedroom and the work space and studio.

This house was lived in by the same coupe for more than 50 years and I just love the eclectic, warm vibe thougthout the house.... not to mention my favourite feature of mid-century homes .. the large windows overlooking the gorgeous green of the garden.
