A Mattress on the Floor....

When I first started Moon to Moon I had been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for years. By buying a bed about a year ago I felt that I was finally an adult, no longer a poor student. I have to admit though I do kind of miss it. Obviously, being 5 months pregnant, it is not practical to go back to the low level, but I guess the mattress on the floor does have its charm, a reminder of when life was a little bit less complex, and a little bit less grown up.... Eeeek!!

What do you guys think? Bohemian Cool or Student Slumming?

I keep my mattress on the floor because I love it...started when my children were babies and made it easy, now I just keep it because I truly love it

I have my matress on the floor, but it makes it soooo much harder to wake up in the morning ! I miss the time when I made a bed out of pals (when I was poor) and all I had to do to stand up was throw away my feet on the side and then half of the work was done. And I think a bed gives volume to a room. Now I dont have a choice, I have my matress right under the roof (not enough space)

Love these! If I had a big space a bed on the floor would be awesome.Maybe next living situation. Love all your posts actually and really look forward to them!XO

it can be awfully convenient when you have babies & small children to have the mattress on the floor! makes an easy co-sleeping solution...if you tweak the decor more towards that of places where low lounging sofas/mattresses are the norm for both sitting and sleeping (think morocco, japan, etc), then it can look very nice, instead of starving student style. low end tables, carved chests, beautiful textiles & rugs make it comfy & beautiful, avoiding the mish-mash look of a floor level bed with standard height western furniture.

Good news Gabi! Ones the baby is born and you choose to co-sleep it is great to have the mattress on the floor, then you don´t have to worry about the baby falling out. We did so but now that Avalon is bigger and mostly sleeps in his own bed we put our bed back – but I miss it! Maybe we should go back to it or just get a really low lovely wooden bed <3

I used to do this, but bugs seem to crawl on the bed way more when its just on the ground. No thanks!

I would rather have a mattress on the floor than a mediocre headboard that I do not love.

It's only student slumming if it's in a frumpy, messy room and the bed never gets made. I think it gives things a really down to earth, cozy feel when it's done right.

I loved having my mattress on the floor, BUT in the PNW you gotta worry about it molding. It's just the coziest way to sleep.

We didn't buy a bed until I was pregnant too! I think I was about 5 months pregnant when we finally got a real bed. I still feel like it's really grown up of us. However, we are going back to a mattress on the floor since we co sleep with our son LOL

We "still" have high beds, build about 2 meters from the ground. We had that when we were students and we still love it - its practical when you don't have much space. Our son even has half of his room as a high bed, a platform where you feel as if you are on holidays in the alps...

love your blog!

I am 42 years old, and still LOVE the idea of the mattress on the floor. I've never done it, but love it nonetheless.

Until recently I had my mattress on the floor and I just loved it but I felt kind of pathetic that I didn't have a real bed (I just had a memory foam mattress). I am liking the height because it's easier to get up in the morning and it gives a bit more to the room. Plus I have under the bed storage area. Although I do miss sleeping on the floor. It was cozier and I didn't have to worry about stuff falling off my bed or night stand. Having a bed on the floor can look really nice. I think I just looked broke though. :P

I loved my mattress on the floor Miss Estelle but i do like the new height too.
Its funny that the association is that you cant afford a bed or are a student isn't it?
