The town of Monsanto, Portugal. A village build around giant Boulders

This extrodianry place is the town of Monsanto in Portugal. The homes as you can see are built around and into giant boulders. The town was named "the most Portuguese village in Portugal" in 1938 and has building restrictions to ensure it is not developed upon.

I love places that are part of the environment around them rather then apart from nature.

Wonderful as usual Gabi. Living between a rock and a hard place can be fun...

Absolutely amazing! Reminds me of some villages I once visited in the centre of France, where people had carved their homes out of the huge rocks around them. They were effectively living in caves until the early 1980s, although they did manage to get electricity into their homes which made a cave-dwelling look pretty cosy!

wauw that´s so cool! i lived nearby Monsanto and used to go there visit my friend who acctually has a house there in these rocks! it is an amazing place, the funny thing is that you cant really see the castle of Monsanto untill your really there...arent people crazy to build in the middle of the rocks? just to protect themselves from harder days...
